PRimordial Goo

My practice has been increasingly devoted to process. Creative rituals have kept me buoyant in these uncertain times and have evolved my work.  To launch a new website now, is an opportunity to share highlights of this process, much generated as daily practice. Setting an intention to create one piece a day for a predetermined period of time with creative constraints. Durational creative rituals have been touchstones where I let myself explore whatever I was curious about, unhinged by expectation or old rules. Living into the questions and seeing that themes of love, loss, memory, sound, movement and letting go organically emerged. This period of incubation has been a recalibration, offering clues for a path forward.

Transformation takes a quiet darkness, like caterpillars as they form a chrysalis. They aren’t a caterpillar…and they aren’t a butterfly…just a sort of a primordial goo.  They transition into a state of “not being” inside their hard shell. Their emergence has an entirely new structure, transcending their former selves. In my studio practice, I gave myself permission to explore without a destination in mind, working through clues that presented themselves as beautiful evidence of process. Remnants of trying, seeing, experimenting and revealing were born in the primordial goo which is really a catalyst…an elixir.

The last few years of darkness taught me that the only way through is trusting in the repeated ritual of coming back, beginning again. Playing with new approaches nourished me and gave me the bravery to manifest truer aspects of myself as a human and a maker…not beholden to what I once was…or who I hope to be. I am grateful for the creative spark and the curiosity that keeps me inspired and for the opportunity to share this with others.
