artist statement
My most recent work is an exploration of internal landscapes inspired by memory, temporality and interdependence. This bedrock shift in approach from my classical training in observation has activated momentum and flow through sometimes obsessive sequences. Repetitive image making over a determined period of time with creative constraints is generating new avenues of expression driven by process, experimentation and an attempt to be present with fear of the unknown. Each series utilizes new materials and concepts, untethered by obligations to the past or the future. Layered variations and silhouettes on translucent vellum and paper evoke absence & presence…being and nothingness. Drawings, collages and paintings embody abstract sequences of intuitive mark making, biomorphic shapes and chromatic beauty.
The devotional quality of these creative rituals ignited three decades ago, when I lived surrounded by Buddhist temples in the mountains of northern Thailand. Immersed in a sensory rhythm of the sacred in everyday life sparked a curiosity about surrendering to ritualized work and its potential for revealing liminal spaces of truth and clarity. My process is also inspired by walking in the fleeting beauty of nature, Tibetan Buddhist art, Surrealist Automatic Drawing, Ecofeminist philosophy and contemporary poetry. The chaos of the world has intensified my necessity to look for solace and inspiration from nature and make tactile, durational work as a meditation on the impermanence of the human condition.
